Pipe markers should be located so that they are readily
visible to plant staff, contractors and emergency response personnel
from the point of normal approach.
At a minimum pipe markers should be placed at the following
locations:
Near all valves, flanges and changes in pipe direction.
On both sides of locations where a pipe penetrates a ceiling, wall
or floor.
At any line entry point.
Place labels at least every 50 feet on straight runs of pipe. Labels
may need to be placed more frequently if the view of the pipe--and
thus the view of a pipe label--is obstructed by other equipment
or pipes.
Pipe marker labels should be placed so they are visible from the
normal point of approach. This may require that more labels be used
than would be necessary to meet just the first four requirements
listed here.
In addition to placing pipe labels at all of the above locations,
be sure to provide arrows at one or both ends of the label to indicate
the direction of flow.
Labels should always be applied so that they read from left to
right, or top to bottom.
